Home of the Cougars!
Osmond Elementary has a tradition of excellence in academics. Results of PAWS (Performance Assessment for Wyoming Students) indicate that Osmond’s test scores are among the best in the state. This kind of performance is the result of excellent teaching at Osmond Elementary as well as the quality teaching at Afton Elementary, Osmond Elementary’s K-3 feeder school.
These graphs show the percent of students scoring proficient or above on the Performance Assessment for Wyoming Students (PAWS).
Math – The math program at Osmond couples computer technology with quality instruction which allows students to move at their own pace. The math program focuses on effectiveness through frequent testing and goal setting. Student progress is closely monitored and students learn the connection between effort and achievement.
Reading – The reading curriculum is a blend of reading practice and detailed instruction on what it takes to understand text. Since students will spend much of their time reading nonfiction, Osmond emphasizes teaching students the skills necessary to understand informational text. Reading practice is promoted through the Reading Renaissance program. In an age when children are often bombarded with a host of extrinsic motivational gimmicks, Osmond has made efforts to make the incentive system more meaningful by focusing on group efforts. This year Osmond will be celebrating 50 years in space. The students have created their own space shuttles and are looking forward to learning much more about space. Group incentives in previous years have included raising money for hospital equipment and creating mosaics from colored tiles and pyramids.
Writing – Giving students the instruction they need to become proficient writers is also a priority at Osmond. Teachers have a common curriculum that uses the same techniques and terminology at each grade level. Students must be able to recognize good writing before they can produce it. With this emphasis, students become proficient at rating and evaluating writing as they refine their own writing skills.
Lifetime Fitness – Osmond Elementary takes advantage of the recreation opportunities available in Star Valley. Students have the opportunity to experience cross county skiing and/or snow shoeing as part of their experience at Osmond. In addition, all students have the opportunity to experience down hill skiing or snow boarding at the Pine Creek Ski Resort.
Enrichment – Enrichment opportunities are also available at Osmond. Each year, after school classes are offered through the GOFASA Academy. A sample of these classes include, Fly Tying, Pottery, Hyper Studio, Improv, Ballroom Dancing, Newspaper Club, W.B.C. (Wickiup Broadcasting Club), and Choir. We also sponsor two drama productions which include a fall melodrama and a spring Operetta.
